I’ve been rewatching IU’s new song music video, starring 2 veteran actresses Na Moon Hee and Kim Young Ok. (how in the world did she pull that cast!)

Okay enough fan-girling, the music video captures the deep bond and unconditional love between two best friends. This was meant to mirror the deep friendship that IU shares with her bestie Yoo In Na.

‘Just the two of us/That’s why we are the best soulmate’

Just like romantic relationships, friendships have their own attachment styles too.

Which one are you?

  • The Fast Forwarder: You feel connected quickly. One good conversation and you trust this person
  • The Self-Sufficient: You tell yourself you’re fine on your own, and for the most part, you are. You care about your friends but you rarely let them in. The friendship stays alive but they don’t always grow.
  • The Push-Pull: You long for close friendships but when someone gets close, you kinda shy away or put the focus on them
  • The Chronic Giver: You show up and remember, and you’re always the one noticing

These are some friendship patterns, often we are a combination of more than one.

While each style has its pros and cons, there is always something we can all work towards in becoming better besties.

The Fast Forwarder can learn to let trust build slowly, while the Self-Sufficient might learn how to let others in and witness vulnerable moments. The Push-Pull friends could learn to trust the closeness is safe, and the Chronic Giver can learn to receive and discern.

‘Even when the whole world comes crashing down/I’ll still fool around for you’

In a world where we’re more digitally connected than ever, we sometimes forget to actually practice love languages with our friends. We see our friends on Instagram and assume they’re fine. We watch their stories instead of asking how they actually are. It may feel awkward for some of us, so just keep it casual and genuine for starters.

‘My dream is for us to become two weird grandmas together’

We may have career, financial and life goals. How about friendship goals?  If you want more meaningful friendships, start by picking up the phone and asking your friends how they are !
