Here are some tips to help you with Qn 2.
Tanjiro Kamado – Demon Slayer
Stress Management Style: Focused breathing and optimism
Tanjiro mastered the Total Concentration Breathing as both a physical as well as psychological strategy to combat the demons and to find a cure for his sister Nezuko. He uses the Sun breathing and water breathing techniques to keep calm and focus on the best strategy to overcome his opponents.
Despite the tragedy of losing his family and entire clan, Tangiro retains exceptional optimism about his situation, often choosing to find positive meaning behind his grief and suffering through his focused determination of preventing others from experiencing the same tragedy that he went through.
Frieren – Frieren, Beyond Journey’s Eng
Stress Management Style: Emotional repression
Although seemingly calm and composed, Frieren suppresses her emotions in order to create emotional distance with the accumulated grief of losing loved ones over her long life-span. While her pragmatic and logical response in the face of conflict could be due to her years of having lived amongst humans, this could also be a defence mechanism to resist getting in touch with her emotions. Although rare, we do catch a glimpse of her temper outburst. Her outburst over the loss of Himmel was the much needed catharsis as she cried continually over many days. This provided the turning point for Frieren, as her bottled emotions of previous losses and grief was finally released and she goes on a journey of emotional processing and building more meaningful relationships.
Maki Zenin – Jujutsu Kaisen
Stress Management Style: Compulsive workaholic
Maki Zenin manages stress and frustration by training harder and pushing beyond her limits just to prove her self-worth. Either cold or confrontational, Maki buries the emotional pain inflicted by her family by focusing everything to become a Jujutsu sorcerer often at the expense of her relationships and even personal safety. While Maki does care about her friends she can be rather harsh on her trainees. When her sister died, Maki was never seen grieving or processing the loss. Instead, it solidified her objective to annihilate the entire Zenin clan.
Eren Jaeger – Attack on Titan
Stress Management Style: Aggression
Eren Jaeger suffered from chronic Post Traumatic Stress with the catastrophic loss of his mother and the burden of having to save Paradiz and his friends. In the early seasons, Eren was always quick to pick a fight with those who offended him especially Jean. As the Attack Titan, his anger may have served the Survey Corp but his rage and extremist actions was in fact a defacto fight or flight stress response to coping with his feelings of being powerless and fearful of the future assigned to him.
Subsequently, we see a seemingly calmer and more scheming Eren. But the anger was never dealt with, only buried under the increasing distress of the impending genocide. Eren’s resignation to his fate resulted in him pushing away those who loved him only to result in deep regret at the end. But the unbridled fear driven anger had set in motion the events that he fought so hard to prevent.
Maomao – The Apothecary Diaries
Stress Management Style: Rational Thinking and Reappraisal.
Maomao always appears cool and collected regardless of how dangerous a situation is such as the scenes when she was kidnapped and when she was hurt by a baton. When she tried to save Jinshi and was hurt by Suirei, instead of getting upset she was impressed with how Suirei outsmarted them. This demonstrates how Maomao reappraises and reframes situation to think rationally. Perhaps her keen interest in apothecary has trained her to think logically and scientifically.
Kyoko Sakura – Puella Magica Madoka
Stress Management Style: Binge eating
Kyoko Sakura’s stress eating is likely linked to the experiences growing up in poverty where her family would often go hungry. When her father was excommunicated, she had to resort to stealing food in order to survive. Despite her tough persona, Kyoko has a generous side as we see her offering food to people. With food as a symbol of luxury and hope, giving food away to people is a show of her love and support for them.
Kyoko’s binge eating is recognised as a contrast in her eating habits before the loss of the family and after. Before, there were no scenes showing her eating while after the loss we see her eating an apple aggressively when Sayaka rejected her offer of the apple. When Sayaka died we see Kyoko binge eating junk food to manage the pain of the loss.
