After 9 years, the mismatched pair of Zootopia bunny Judy Hopps and fox Nick Wilde are still partners in the police force of Zootopia. While Judy is a serious cop, Nick loves to relax and crack jokes.
*spoiler alert!*
Why the difference
Judy and Nick’s initial target was Gary, the rattlesnake, who tries to restore his family’s name despite being banned from the city.
“We have a lot of misconceptions about reptiles,” said co-director Jared Bush. “But Gary is the most kind-hearted, warm, vulnerable character we’ve ever made.”
Often we make assumptions about people from the way they look. That in itself is actually our human brain trying to reduce information overload. So we tend to rely on schemas, mental patterns perhaps from our own upbringing to make sense of the world and how to ‘size-up’ a person or situation quickly.

The differences that brings us together
Throughout the movie, we see the 3 of them working together to defeat the lynxley family.
In one of the final acts, Judy kicks Pawbert Lynxley and Nick trips him. However, Pawbert springs up and pins them down, furiously declaring he will destroy all of Reptile Ravine.
Just then, Gary appears from behind and tightly wraps his body around him, and Nibbles whittles a log into a baseball bat to knock Pawbert on the head with.
What we can learn from this is that everyone brings their own unique abilities and experiences. With them, we can actually achieve a good outcome despite being very different!
“As humans, there’s a tendency to notice differences in others. This movie shows that while differences exist, they make us stronger.” – Jared Bush

Differences in relationships
Along the way, Judy and Nick clash repeatedly, testing their partnership.
“They have very different ways of looking at the world,” said director Byron Howard. “It was fun to see them challenge each other and ask if their differences were too much to overcome.”
When we are in a relationship, we may get too caught up in our own blindspots and tendencies that we may forget or neglect our partners’ needs. What we can learn from Judy and Nick is to set some time to repair and connect again.
