Had to navigate a difficult family gathering this Lunar New Year? Cathy Earnshaw and Heathcliff might relate. The characters are from the 2026 film Wuthering Heights, a period drama loosely based on the Emily Bronte book of the same name. Cathy and Heathcliff long to be together, but Cathy marries into the Linton family, fearing that marrying the lowly Heathcliff would degrade her. This sets off a series of tragic events fueled by jealousy, passion, and rage.

While that may make for an entertaining story, Emily Bronte intended for it to be an exploration of how generational trauma can create an endless cycle of pain and tragedy. Luckily, with modern sensibilities on our side, the cycle can be broken and such drama only saved for the big screen.

When dealing with difficult family members, it is important to set boundaries. During family gatherings, a polite “I’m not interested in discussing this topic. Let’s discuss something else!” or “I don’t wish to talk about this right now” can communicate clearly to family members that they have overstepped a boundary. Though family members may mean well, being pushed into a conversation you do not want to have will likely end up becoming an unpleasant experience for everyone involved. Clear communication, no matter how scary it may feel, ultimately results in a better time for everyone, and better relationships too!
It is also important to manage your expectations. Often, we harbor hopes that a difficult family member may change their ways. Instead, we should meet family members where they are and learn to let go of expectations. It may be painful to do so and we may mourn for the family members we wished for but never had. Yet, it is also important to look toward the future and focus on the experiences we are able to create.
