G-IDLE’s new single Mono has many people asking what it really means.
“In this complicated world, if there’s something you truly love, I hope you can just love it simply. Without overthinking it, without worrying about what others think, just hold onto that feeling and enjoy it.” – Yuqi

The Overthinking Trap
Psychologist Barry Schwartz coined the term “Paradox of choice” to explain that more options doesn’t necessarily make us happier. Sometimes it can make us more anxious, more dissatisfied, and less able to commit to anything.
Whether it’s career choices, friendship groups or even how to angle our shot for our next social media post, the endless choices can turn every decision into complex cognitive overload. Maybe that’s why our generation is just about the most burnt out people on planet earth.
Don’t get this wrong, it is good to be self-aware, consider consequences and make wise decision after careful deliberation. But there’s always the risk of us tipping over into analysis paralysis, where instead of living your own life, you’re constantly analysing and grading it in real time against everything else out there.
‘Don’t let the noise get in your way’

The Bigger Message of ‘Mono’
“This song carries the message of stripping away all the effects and focusing on the essence.” – Minnie
The beauty of ‘Mono’ is that it doesn’t prescribe what we should do, where we should be or hang out with. It’s a message that looks inwards first before we look outwards, either to compare, seek affirmation or make socially acceptable choices.
In a generation drowning in options, opinions, and overstimulation, going ‘mono’ to accept who we really are and what we like without the commentary or performance, might be the most radical act of self-care we have left.
“When you love yourself, you can love everyone”

Simplifying life and love
Loving is not about being uncritical or unaware but it doesn’t have to be so complicated. It’s about knowing when to put the analysis down. Be it self-love, friendship or romantic love, when we can look beyond the trappings of social labelling and value judgement, we live authentically.
SHUHUA said it perfectly: “Love doesn’t need unnecessary embellishment… even in its simplest and purest form, love itself already holds immense power.
‘Let it all fade out, play the whole world in Mono’.
